Amerikas intolerans visar sitt fula ansikte

Ytterligare ett inlägg från min sons blogg. Detta i reaktion till att Kalifornien röstade att göra gay marriage olagligt.

Proposition 8 and other related propositions. Within the law, they prevent gay marriage. But the spirit of the law is one of discrimination, and it’s wrong. Just wrong. I have some questions of anybody who voted for this amendment. Why? Why does this matter to you? These people want the same values you get from marriage. Stability and happiness with the one they love. They want the same institution you prefer so sufficiently. They don’t want to take anything away from you.

All this, with the claim of ’strenghtening’ marriage. How do you strengthen marriage by eliminating it? How do you strengthen marriage by forcing gays into marriages that are built on lies, to others and to oneself? What is strong about a marriage built on force and shame and unfairness and lies? Constitutions are designed to protect the rights of people, and yet these propositions write discrimination directly into constitutions. You worry about redefining marriage? The redefinition of marriage is what made mixed-race marriages legal. Our own president-elect would not have had legally married parents. Marriages between blacks and whites were declared illegal, just the same as so many same-sex marriages are declared illegal. What would you do if somebody declared YOUR marriage illegal?

With all the troubles in the world, your moral compass tells you what is important is to cut away marriage from others, stripping away their happiness, piece by piece?

This would not force you to marry any couples you do not wish, religious institutions have that right already. This would not force you into a same-sex marriage.
